Forensic Imaging & Postmortem CT Expertise

Modern Imaging for Clearer Answers

Forensic Imaging Associates provides postmortem CT, forensic image interpretation, and forensic radiology consultation for coroners, medical examiners, hospitals, families, and attorneys.

About Us

Founded to Bring Greater Clarity to Death Investigation

Forensic Imaging Associates was founded by Dr. Matthew Fleishman and Dr. Andrew Fisher, two board-certified radiologists with decades of experience in trauma, emergency, body, and post-mortem imaging. They created FIA to make advanced forensic imaging expertise accessible to medical examiners, coroners, physicians, attorneys, and families seeking answers.

Through timely, non-invasive imaging and expert interpretation, FIA provides clear, objective information that supports existing death-investigation processes—with precision, collaboration, and respect.

Using advanced imaging and specialized interpretation, FIA helps clients gather meaningful medical evidence through a process that is non-invasive, respectful, and tailored to the circumstances of each case.

What It Is

A Different Way to Investigate After a Death

When a person dies unexpectedly, the need for answers can be urgent. Yet a traditional autopsy may not always be readily available, necessary, or consistent with a family’s preferences.

Forensic imaging uses medical imaging (most commonly postmortem computed tomography, or postmortem CT) to examine the body after death. The resulting images can help identify traumatic injuries, fractures, patterns of medical and surgical diseases, medical devices, foreign objects, and other findings that contribute to understanding the circumstances leading to death.

In some cases, forensic imaging can serve as an alternative to a traditional autopsy. In others, it can help investigators determine whether further examination is needed or provide supplemental information alongside a traditional autopsy. The appropriate imaging approach is tailored to the circumstances of death, applicable legal requirements, and any specific questions the examination is intended to answer.

Forensic Imaging Associates works collaboratively with other forensic and medical professionals as well as families involved to determine how imaging can best support each investigation.

Our Expertise

Specialized Interpretation Matters

Postmortem CT interpretation requires unique forensic imaging expertise and experience beyond that which is applied to the radiologic evaluation of living patients. Changes that occur after death can resemble disease or injury, while subtle and critically important forensic findings may be unfamiliar to radiologists without relevant training and experience.

Forensic Imaging Associates brings focused medical expertise to the review of postmortem imaging. We evaluate each case within its larger context, considering the available clinical history, circumstances of death, investigative questions, and other relevant information.

Expertise in subspecialized areas of radiology is available to the FIA team through a broad consultative network when needed to address unique questions that arise in postmortem CT evaluation. Examples include specialized expertise in neuro and pediatric imaging.

Benefits

Why Consider Forensic Imaging?

Non-Invasive

CT imaging can examine internal structures without invasive surgical dissection, preserving the integrity of the body while gathering comprehensive and valuable information.

Respectful

A non-invasive postmortem examination may better align with a family’s personal, cultural, or religious preferences while still supporting the search for answers.

Timely

The forensic imaging review process is typically quicker than traditional autopsy, often completed within hours of death. Digital images can be securely transmitted, interpreted and shared with qualified professionals, helping investigators access this specialized expertise from almost any location where CT imaging can be performed.

Practical

Forensic imaging can assist medical examiners, coroners, hospitals, and other entities to quickly evaluate cases and make informed decisions about whether additional examinations or consultations are warranted.

Expertly Interpreted

The value of a postmortem CT scan depends on more than acquiring the images. Experienced interpretation is essential to distinguish expected postmortem changes from findings that may be relevant to the investigation.

What We Do

Forensic Imaging Services

Forensic Imaging Associates provides services designed to meet the needs of both professional and private clients.

Audiences

Who We Serve

Coroners and Medical Examiners

We support death investigations with specialized imaging interpretation, consultation, and timely collaborative case review. Our services can help offices expand their investigative capabilities while working within their available resources and existing procedures.

Hospitals and Healthcare Organizations

We assist with unexpected deaths, family-requested postmortem imaging, outstanding medical questions, and cases in which imaging may contribute to quality review or a better understanding of clinical events.

Treating Physicians

When questions remain after an in-hospital death, postmortem CT may provide treating physicians with timely, non-invasive medical information. Forensic Imaging Associates works with physicians and hospital systems to review postmortem imaging, explain relevant findings, and support informed decisions about death certification or the need for additional examination.

Families

Families may seek postmortem imaging when they want answers after an unexpected loss or wish to explore a less invasive alternative to a traditional autopsy. We approach these inquiries with compassion and help families understand the possible role—and limitations—of imaging in their circumstances.

Attorneys

We provide independent imaging review, forensic radiology consultation, and visual materials for cases involving injury, cause of death, medical care, or other questions that depend on the accurate interpretation of imaging evidence.

Clear Answers Begin With the Right Questions

No single method is appropriate for every death investigation. Forensic imaging is most useful when the examination begins with a clear understanding of the circumstances, the available evidence, and the questions that need to be answered.

Forensic Imaging Associates combines modern imaging with careful medical interpretation and a collaborative approach. Whether you are investigating a death, reviewing a legal matter, assisting a family, or exploring an alternative to a traditional autopsy, we can help you understand the options available and determine an appropriate next step.
